On the barren diamond-diving coast of South Africa, Johan and Thami, an ex-cop and a gardener from starkly contrasting backgrounds, maintain a beachfront guest lodge during the off-season while looking for a way to escape their dead-end lives. When Smith, a retired businessman, shows up one foggy night, the two men think they’ve found an ideal investor for their scheme to buy into a government-run diamond mining concession. Soon, these rootless men find themselves in a power struggle fueled by greed, desperation and entitlement. Groundswell is a psychological thriller about hunger and hope, and the glittering promises of a transforming society.

About the Company: The New Group

The New Group is an artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. While constantly evolving, we maintain an ensemble approach to all our work and an articulated style of emotional immediacy in our acting and productions. In this way, we seek a theater that is adventurous, stimulating and most importantly "now" — a true forum for the present culture.

The New Group's past productions have also received awards including Best New Musical, and the Calloway, Kalbie, Taking Off, and Theatre World Awards. This season, The New Group is excited to bring you the American premiere of Kevin Elyot's Mouth To Mouth, followed by the revival of Eugene O'Neill's epic tragedy Mourning Becomes Electra.
