The themes of power, lust, and revenge run rampant in this anonymous,

Jacobean play. Written a few years after “Hamlet”, “The Revenger’s Tragedy”

examines the societal effects of overindulgence and bureaucratic corruption. The

production opens with an intricate dance routine, pulling the audience into a

world driven by sexual appetites and violent impulses.

Matthew Rauch steals the show as the revenge-thristy Vindice, flawlessly

infusing his character with wit, charm, purpose and passion. Mr. Rauch is in

good company: from Claire Lautier as the salacious Duchess, to Marc Vietor as

the effeminate and comical Lussurioso, the entire cast gives exciting,

over-the-top performances.

The macabre world of the play is underlined by Clint E.B. Ramos’ gothic,

dominatrix-like costumes, and Peter West’s complex lighting design creates

depth on stage and helps construct the production’s haunting aesthetic.

Jesse Berger’s vision soars, bringing innovation and eclecticism to his

direction. Despite all the blood and gore inherent in this production, Berger

manages to find the comedy within the tragedy, making “The Revenger’s Tragedy”

a tour de force that should not be missed.
